It is hard not knowing what to expect and trying to figure out what exactly is going to be on the exam. Thus, I decided I wanted to give more information on the exam, what it is like, and what to expect throughout each section. The test allows 45 minutes per section, however, once you hit 45 minutes you must go onto the next section.
- If you do finish with a section early you are able to go over your answers or move onto the next section but once you do move onto the next section you cannot go back and change your answers. The test consists of 91 questions and is all multiple choice. There are no scheduled breaks however if you have time leftover in a section, instead of going onto the next section you are allowed to go to the bathroom, drink water, eat a snack, etc. The test usually takes place at a designated facility with a proctor and computer to take your test alongside other students. My Kaplan test was all online and was proctored by a professor. For the math section, you are given a calculator and scratch piece of paper. My exam was set up this way and it is important to talk with your testing center to see if things differ or there are any additional rules needed to be followed during your exam.
- The reason I recommend taking the online ACT and SAT practice tests for reading is that it gets you comfortable with analyzing long passages on a computer as well as allows you to understand the mistakes you made and why you made them a little more informatively. Another tip I would recommend is using a scratch piece of paper to write down the main concept of the passage that way when you are hung up on a question you can always differ back to the topic and make an informed guess if you get stuck. For this section what I found works best for me was doing the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam Practice Math questions all first, then reviewing the answers to see which ones I missed. The ones I missed I would find youtube videos through Khan Academy to help explain how to solve the equations correctly.
- I find this is more helpful than trying to read why you got the answer wrong and helps with retention for your test later on. The one on your phone is an accurate representation of the calculator used on the test. And the answer choices are A. On the exam, you were given passages that were all nearly a page in length. The passages were very choppy and hard to read as is, and then on top of that, you are to find the mistakes, analyze nouns, verbs, pronouns, conjunctions ect. It was the hardest portion for me because as I was reading the passages, I thought every sentence needed to be rewritten… not just the ones that they were asking to rewrite. I have watched a lot of youtube videos stating that you need to take anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 as well as microbiology in order to understand the science portion. Now although those classes may help, they are absolutely not necessary for taking the exam. In fact, I had only taken Anatomy and Physiology 1 and still needed to go back and refresh for this exam because I had forgotten about some of the things that they were asking for.
- Some of the things I did take away from the booklet were Osmosis and Diffusion, as well as the 3 main compartments of fluid, but other than that the test was mainly Anatomy and Physiology and consisted of many different components. The best study tip I could give is utilizing the quizlet study cards that were recommended to me here , they go over some of the things that I was able to study to help me get a good score on the science portion. I had less than a month to study and was studying for at least 30 minutes to an hour a day just to practice and feel comfortable with the material. The test itself was not as time constraining as I thought it would be, I think practicing at home with a timer and study techniques that make you learn more efficiently is the best way to prepare for this exam. The Reading section is the same format that will be on the test, extracting main ideas and summarizing each paragraph. I scored an As for Math, there were a lot of fraction problems; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Also make sure you are very familiar with percentages. For the dosage calculation questions, there were fairly basic problems and maybe 3 or 4 on the test. There wasn't any that involved X grain I had to google X grain when I saw it on the practice question. The only dosage calculation problem I remember was a situational question A nurse has to administer a medication twice a day, at 10am and 4pm. Will she have enough for both doses? In which you have to find the least common denominator and in order to add fractions together and the decide if it is more or less than the oz available For the math portion, I also bought a dosage calculations math book from Barnes and Noble, it has a lot of situational problems that closely resemble what was on the exam and will more than prepare you.

Writing was by far the most annoying section of them all. The Kaplan study guide does not reflect what is on the actual test. In the Kaplan study guide, you will have a section for vocabulary and spelling only, neither of which are on the test. I take that back, I had one question on my test where it asked which sentence had an incorrectly spelled word, and it was very obvious. The word was "roll", in which is was the wrong form of roll. The correct spelling was "role", as in "role model". The Writing section was in short story format, each sentence numbered, and it would ask questions as far as grammar, structure, or punctuation - which sentence has a comma where one isn't needed or which sentence is repetitive and not necessary in the paragraph. There were few questions that asked which sentence has an incorrect usage of a verb or which sentence has a subject-verb that doesn't agree. Mostly there would be a question with either a sentence, or even a whole paragraph, that asks where would be the best place to insert it within the short story, those were the hardest for me, I tend to be an over analyzer!
